Making sure kids clean their teeth is hard going.. Making sure kids clean their teeth is hard going... they sometimes just don't want to do it. Here are my top tips on how to look after your children's teeth every day all year round: 1. Repetition. They may not do it properly but attempt it each day in the morning and night. If they show an interest at other times, give that a go too. 2. Behaviour mimicking. Our little ones watch us and want to do the same thing, not great most of the time but when it comes to dental health, this is perfect. Clean your teeth with them, show them how you do it, help and guide them but ultimately, let them give it a go. 3. PH Balancing. When they eat sweets try to get them to was their mouth with water and give them a piece of cheese. The cheese will balance out the PH in their mouths counterbalancing the effects of acids in sweets and sugar. 4. Don't push it. When your child is upset, don't force or push the issue, you don't want them to become fearful of brushing. Some days you've just got to let it go and try tomorrow. 5. Dentist fear. From an early age, even before their first tooth punches through, take them to the dentist with you. They will see it's nothing to fear and this will work wonders when they are older, they'll start looking forward to the dentist - I kid you not. My eldest loves it because she feels like she's doing a good job with her teeth. My youngest not so much but we are getting there.
