Ingredient Focus – Xylitol

A natural sugar alcohol with dental benefits? yes please. We’ve got it in our Brightening Antioxidant Toothpaste for good reason 🙂

Xylitol is a natural sugar alcohol that is used as a sugar substitute in many products, including chewing gum, mints, and oral care products like toothpaste and mouthwash. Xylitol helps improve dental health in several ways:

  1. Reduces the growth of harmful bacteria: Xylitol is not metabolised by oral bacteria like sugar is, so it reduces the growth of harmful bacteria in the mouth that can cause tooth decay and gum disease.
  2. Increases saliva production: Using products containg xylitorl can increase saliva production in the mouth. Saliva helps to neutralise harmful acids produced by bacteria and also aids in the remineralisation of tooth enamel. Aren’t our bodies magical?
  3. Prevents plaque buildup: Xylitol can help prevent the buildup of plaque on teeth. Plaque is a sticky film of bacteria and sugars that forms on teeth and can lead to tooth decay and gum disease.
  4. Promotes tooth remineralisation: Xylitol can promote the remineralisation of tooth enamel, which is the process by which minerals such as calcium and phosphate are added back to the tooth enamel. This can help to strengthen the teeth and make them more resistant to decay.

A pretty fantastic yet simple ingredient right?

Did you know alongside the other ingredients in our toothpaste, Xylitol has helped us keep fluoride away from our toothpaste but also allows our toothpaste to fight gum disease, bacteria, tooth decay and cavities!

Magical indeed 🙂
