Have you ever wondered why peppermint is the go to for most toothpastes and mouth washes?
It’s often thought that peppermint is used purely as a breath freshener, in synthetic toothpastes and mouthwashes it’s in there for that for sure, but in natural products it’s in there for a multitude of reasons.
Natural peppermint essential oil is antibacterial, antimicrobial and freshening. It is effective against anaerobic bacteria, which thrive in a low-oxygen environment such as the spaces between teeth or below the gum line where cavities can form. It’s been known to show effectiveness in killing bacteria and fungus that cause infections, cavities and bad breath.
Peppermint essential oil also helps relieve pain and is soothing on the gums making it a perfect addition to any dental routine for someone with sensitivities.
Peppermint floral water or hydrosol would have similar effects but as water from the Peppermint plant is much less potent than an essential oil this would pack less of a punch – but would be great in mouth washes.
What do you think of peppermint? love the taste of loathe it, it’s healing creds are pretty powerful.
