What are upcycled ingredients?

I’m often talking about how we use upcycled ingredients in our booster face oils and our toothpaste, our three ingredient led products. But what does that mean exactly?

Upcycled skincare ingredients are components derived from by-products or waste materials that are typically discarded in other industries, particularly the food and beverage industry. These ingredients are repurposed and utilised in skincare products to promote sustainability and reduce waste.

Here are some examples of upcycled skincare ingredients:

  1. Coffee Grounds: Used coffee grounds can be repurposed as exfoliants in scrubs and masks, providing skin benefits such as improved circulation and reduced puffiness.
  2. Fruit Seeds and Pits: Seeds and pits from fruits like apricots, cherries, and olives can be ground into powders or oils. These can be used in exfoliants, moisturizers, and serums for their nourishing and antioxidant properties.
  3. Fruit Peels: Peels from fruits such as oranges, lemons, and bananas contain essential oils, vitamins, and minerals that can be extracted and used in skincare for their brightening and rejuvenating effects.
  4. Wine By-products: Grape seeds and skins left over from wine production are rich in antioxidants like resveratrol. These by-products can be used in anti-aging and skin-protecting formulations.
  5. Vegetable Scraps: Leftover peels and scraps from vegetables like carrots, cucumbers, and potatoes can be processed to extract beneficial nutrients and incorporated into hydrating and soothing skincare products.
  6. Nut Shells: Shells from nuts like almonds and walnuts can be finely ground and used as natural exfoliants in scrubs and cleansers.
  7. Brewery Waste: Spent grains and hops from beer production contain proteins and vitamins that can be used in hydrating and anti-inflammatory skincare formulations.
  8. Cocoa Husks: The outer shells of cocoa beans, usually discarded during chocolate production, can be utilized for their anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties in skincare.

By integrating these upcycled ingredients in our skincare and dental products we not only contribute to waste reduction but have also introduced unique and potent natural ingredients that benefit the skin and oral health.

In our Brightening Antioxidant Toothpaste we utilise upcycled cranberry extract that would otherwise have been considered waste in the juicing industry and we also use upcycled sugarcane for our tube packaging from the sugar industry that would have been thrown away.

In our booster oils we utilise upcycled apple seed oil, grape seed oil, strawberry seed oil, raspberry seed oil, blackberry seed oil and cranberry seed oil. This is from a combination of the wine and juicing industry. Shop our Soothing Berry Booster here. Shop our Re Glow Booster Here

By upcycling perfectly good, potent ingredients within our skincare and dental care we are saving a considerable amount of material from being wasted. Energy was used by making these ingredients and processing them, it would be a travesty to just throw these ingredients away.

Sadly, in the food and beverage industry as well as in the cosmetic industry, there is so much wastage of materials and ingredients. By using upcycled ingredients we are mitigating waste and reducing carbon, whilst also offering amazing products for your overall health.
